Differential Service and Repair
Has your car suddenly started making a whining, rumbling or loud clanking noise when going from idling to moving? Does the sound seem to get worse when coasting compared with when accelerating? Is your vehicle high-mileage (150K miles or more)? If any of these symptoms sound familiar, it may be time to repair or replace your differential.
What the heck is a differential?
The gearbox that divides the engine torque and allows each output to spin at a different speed is called a differential. There are differentials for front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles. The wheels on a car sometimes move at different speeds and distances when turning, and the differential allows each wheel to rotate at a different speed (hence its name). Additionally, the differential helps slow the rotational speed of the transmission before it reaches the wheels.
The differential is connected to the drive shaft and drive axles, and is comprised of several components, including the flange, which attaches to the drive shaft, the left and right axle shafts, ring and pinion gears, and side gears. Without the proper tools and experience, a differential can be extremely tricky to locate and repair. Our specialists at The Auto Repair Place are highly trained, ASE certified and AAA-approved, so you know your differential repair will be done right the first time.
To keep your vehicle running problem-free, your differential fluid needs to be replaced at regular intervals. The lubricating fluid transfers heat away from the gears of the differential, which can improve the performance and lengthen the lifespan of your vehicle. If the fluid breaks down or a leak occurs, the increased friction and heat can cause the gears to start to grind, making those worrisome noises that can lead to a breakdown and costly repairs down the road. Put your mind at ease and let the experienced technicians at The Auto Repair Place service your vehicle and replace your old differential fluid before problems start.
